History:

After their dominance of English football in the 1990s, Manchester United's capture of "only" the FA Cup in 2004 and League Cup in 2006 is regarded as something of a trophy drought. United are desperate to be crowned Premiership champions again - and as always the Champions League is high on their list of priorities. First Arsenal, and then more ominously Chelsea because of their spending power, have knocked United off their pedestal, and the club's takeover by the Glazers has changed the boardroom landscape. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has brought the club unprecedented success, but has to keep repeating it, and has found that harder each season since Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge. Ferguson has also had to adjust to the loss of Roy Keane, as well as the likes of David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy. In Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, United boast two of the brightest talents around, but question-marks remain about the midfield. Nevertheess it is a near-certainty that United will be in contention for all the major honours again this season. The glamour club's origins were somewhat more humble. In 1878, the dining room committee of the carriage and waggon works of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company formed Newton Heath L and YR Cricket and Football Club. They won the Manchester Cup in 1886 and in 1892 were elected to Division 1 of the Football League as Newton Heath. After North Road the club played at a ground on Bank Street, Clayton. But they struggled, especially after relegation in 1894, and by 1902 attendances had fallen to as low as 500 while debts had risen to Â£2,000. Just as Ardwick went bust in 1894 to be re-born immediately as Manchester City, Newton Heath went into liquidation in 1902 - only to be rescued by wealthy brewer John H. Davies, who converted the Heathens into Manchester United. The ambitious Davies took the massive risk, at the time, of buying a site five miles from Clayton, close to the Old Trafford cricket ground. Old Trafford officially opened on 19 February 1910. Liverpool were the visitors (and had the poor taste to win 4-3), but the obvious potential of a ground with an 80,000 capacity aroused jealousy of "Moneybags United", as they were quickly labelled. However, between the two world wars, United"s fortunes waned. They were relegated from the first Division in 1931, and only 3,500 turned up for their opening Second Division game. By Christmas 1931 the banks were prepared to pull the plug on United. Bankruptcy was only avoided by the intervention of another wealthy businessman, James Gibson. He paid off United"s Â£30,000 debts, but the team continued to struggle and in 1934 only narrowly avoided relegation to the Third Division. Although the club"s return to the First Division in 1936 was only brief, bigger problems loomed. The stadium"s proximity to Trafford Park docks made it a prime target for German air raids when War broke out. In March 1941, bombs destroyed the Main Stand, dressing rooms and offices, as well as the United Road terrace and cover. United gratefully accepted City"s offer to share Maine Road, and were exiled from a forlorn-looking Old Trafford for the next eight years. Homeless and debt-ridden by the end of the War, United were saved this time by a run of success on the pitch - masterminded by former City star and now United manager Matt Busby. They returned to Old Trafford in August 1949. The first of Busby"s three great sides won the FA Cup in 1948 and the League championship in 1952, as well as finishing runners-up in the League four times in five seasons. When that ageing team broke up, Busby turned to youth with dazzling success. His Busby Babes might well have become England"s greatest ever club side. They won the League championship in 1956 and retained it in 1957 (when they unluckily lost the FA Cup Final), and in 1956-57 pioneered British entry into the European Cup, against the short-sighted wishes of the Football League. They reached the semi-finals at the first attempt, and had just reached the same stage the following season, by virtue of of 3-3 draw with Red Star Belgrade, when tragedy struck on 6 February 1958. The plane bringing the United party back from Yugoslavia touched down at Munich to refuel. In appalling weather conditions - a blizzard was blowing - the pilots attempted to get the plane home rather than stop over for a night. Attempting to take off from the icy runway for the third time, the plane was unable to get enough height and hit a house. Twenty-three of the passengers were killed, including eight of the legendary Busby Babes: Roger Byrne, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, Eddie Colman, Billy Whelan, Tommy Taylor, David Pegg and Geoff Bent. Busby himself was critically injured, while Johnny Berry and Jackie Blanchflower were unable to play again. Four survivors - Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes, Harry Gregg and Dennis Viollet - played for United in the FA Cup Final defeat against Bolton three months later, after a makeshift squad had reached the Wembley showpiece on a tide of national emotion. Busby then set about building another great side. By the mid-1960s, he"d succeeded. Charlton and Foulkes were links with the Babes, and with the addition of stars such as Denis Law and George Best, plus Pat Crerand, Nobby Stiles, Tony Dunne and Shay Brennan, United won the League title in 1965 and again in 1967. They were back in the European Cup, and in 1968 - ten years after Munich -Busby's dream was realised when United beat Benfica 4-1 at Wembley in extra-time. That was the high-point of Busby"s reign, and from then until the early 1970s the club fell into a slow decline, exacerbated when Busby, who stepped down as team manager, proved virtually irreplaceable. The unthinkable happened in 1973-74: United were relegated. Under Tommy Docherty, though, they bounced back within a season. Docherty"s exciting side reached successive FA Cup finals, winning the second, but he was promptly sacked for non-football reasons. With arch-rivals Liverpool now dominating English football, United endured a frusting decade in the 1980s, FA Cup victories failing to compensate for an inability to win the League. Alex Ferguson was appointed manager in succession to Ron Atkinsion in November 1986, and he too struggled to find the right formula at first. But FA Cup success in 1990 was followed by European Cup Winners" Cup victory in 1991, a near-miss in 1992 and then, in the inaugural season of the Premier League, the elusive title. It marked the start of a remarkable hegemony over English football by United that spanned the 1990s and continued into the new century. Ferguson"s sides - inspired and embellished by the likes of Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Denis Irwin, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - have won eight of the 12 Premiership titles so far contested. They"ve also won two domestic Doubles and, in 1999, an unprecedented Treble of Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup. Between 1997 and 2004, Arsenal emerged as United"s most consistent rivals, the two clubs sharing the title in alternate seasons during the last four campaigns. But now Chelsea are the team to beat. While United did not enjoy a particularly good season in 2003-04 by their own lofty standards, they still picked up the FA Cup, and are likely to remain a potent force for the foreseeable future. Indeed, their remarkable success had made them world football"s wealthiest club until Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea, a marketing giant with the capacity to generate huge revenue around the world.

History:

Probably no other club in world football has been so dramatically transformed by the arrival of a wealthy benenector as Chelsea. With money almost literally no object in the transfer market, Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho has used Roman Abramovich's spending power liberally, but the shrewd tactician has created what is currently England's leading club side. Mourinho led the Blues to the Premiership title in 2004-05, retained the crown last season and is favorite to make it a hat-trick in 2006-07. Summer imports included Andriy Shevchenko, Michael Ballack, Ashley Cole, Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel, and while accommodating all his stars will again be a challenge, Mourinho is a man on a mission and has raised the bar significantly in the Premiership. The club's current eminence is in contrast to their beginnings and indeed most of the first 100 years of their existence. The catalyst for the formation of Chelsea Football Club was the fact that nearby Fulham FC turned down the opportunity to rent the Stamford Bridge ground from landlord Mr H A Mears, who had owned the site since 1904. Mears, though, was determined to develop the site as a football stadium rather than sell it to the Great Western Railway. He got together with Frederick Parker, who convinced Mears that it would be financially advantageous to develop a major sporting venue in south-west London. So Chelsea FC was formed in 1905. When they were denied admission to the Southern League, Chelsea were immediately admitted into the Second Division of the Football League. Despite spending seven spells in the old Second Division between 1905 and 1989, Chelsea have never been out of the top two tiers of English football, and in 1992 became one of the founder members of the Premier League. In 1954-55 manager Ted Drake - legendary swashbuckling goalscorer for Arsenal and England in the 1930s - guided Chelsea to their first League title. Tommy Docherty and Dave Sexton built teams that made an impact in cup competitions in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but by the early 1980s the near-bankrupt club had been bought by Ken Bates for a token Â£1. As chairman Bates enjoyed a flamboyant reign that saw Chelsea secure Stamford Bridge as their home. Bates oversaw the ambitious development of the stadium as part of the Chelsea Village hotel, sports and leisure complex. He also appointed, in succession, Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Claudio Ranieri as team managers. The club duly established themselves among the small band of England"s elite and enjoyed a glamorous image as well as more success in cup competitions. But by mid-2003 Chelsea were nearly bankrupt again. Enter Abramovich, the Russian billionaire, who bought the club off Bates and embarked on a spending spree unprecedented in English or indeed world football. The investment in highly-priced international talent nearly paid early dividends: Chelsea finished second in the Premiership in 2003-04, their best position for 49 years; and they were European Cup (Champions League) semi-finalists. But nearly was not good enough for Abramovich, and manager Ranieri - whose position had been insecure all season despite good results - paid the price with his job in early summer 2004. His replacement was Jose Mourinho, who had just won five major trophies in two years with Porto, including the Uefa Cup (2003) and European Cup (2004). The Portuguese coach promised Chelsea the Premiership title under his management - and has duly delivered.

History:

After reaching the final of the Champions League last season and qualifying for the current campaign, Arsenal's priorities are clear as they settle into their impressive new 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium: Go one better this time in Europe's premier club competition, while mounting a sustained challenge to Chelsea in the Premiership. Although key players such as Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole and Jose Reyes left the club in the summer, the arrivals of Tomas Rosicky, William Gallas and Julio Baptista - and the emergence of highly talented young stars - mean the club still boasts one of the most talented squads in the League. Arsenal Football Club was formed by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east London, in 1886. They began as Dial Square (the name of one of the workshops), and included two former Nottingham Forest players, Fred Beardsley and Morris Bates. Beardsley wrote to his old club for help and Forest provided the fledgling club with a full set of red jerseys and a ball. The club became known as the Woolwich Reds, although their official title soon after formation was Royal Arsenal (1886), then Woolwich Arsenal (1891) and finally Arsenal in 1914, by which time the club had moved to Highbury in North London. Arsenal turned professional in 1891 and became a limited company in 1893. They became the first southern-based team to join the Football League (1893), and won promotion from the Second to the First Division in 1904. Relegation in 1913 was immediately followed by the move to north London in search of a more accessible location and a bigger, more reliable fan base. On the resumption of football after the First World War, Arsenal succeeded in being elected to the expanded First Division at the expense of bitter local rivals Tottenham Hotspur. But if their elevation smacked of political intrigue, they have justified their status, having enjoyed continuous membership of the top flight ever since (80 consecutive seasons in the First Division or Premier League by the end of 2005-06 season, excluding wartime; next best is Everton with 52 consecutive seasons). The arrival of Herbert Chapman as manager in 1925 really put The Gunners on the football map. They became the first southern club to win the League title, doing so in record-breaking style in 1931. Arsenal dominated the 1930s under first Chapman then George Allison, and enjoyed further success immediately after the Second World War under former player and trainer turned manager Tom Whittaker. Bertie Mee led them to European success and the domestic Double in the early 1970s, and a member of Mee"s side, George Graham, took Arsenal to six major trophies in nine years (1986-87 until 1994-95). Arsene Wenger was appointed manager in 1996 and has led the club to two domestic Doubles (1998 and 2002). In 2004 he became the first man to win three League titles for the Gunners. His side completed the 2003-04 campaign without losing a single League game - a modern record. It was the second season in three that Arsenal remained unbeaten away from home. The Gunners have won 13 of the 18 League titles won by London clubs and are second only to Manchester United with FA Cup wins (10). But their major challenge now is to win the European Cup (Champions League) after their ten-men were thwarted 2-1 by Barcelona in the 2006 final in Paris.
